In the heart of the historic old town of Zofingen, we run two hotels with history, heart and character: the Hotel Engel and the Aparthotel Amadeo (formerly “Rössli”). Both hotels can look back on a long, eventful past.
Engel impresses with its charming style and has always been a place to arrive and feel at home. With its apartments, Amadeo offers comfort and design at affordable prices.
What the two hotels have in common today is not only their central location, but above all one thing: the Steiner family’s genuine hospitality.
1285
Today’s Hotel Engel looks back on a long and eventful history. Between 1285 and 1848, the building served as an annexe and farm building for the neighboring Cistercian monastery of St. Urban. The stone coat of arms plaque on the facade – with the coat of arms of the monastery and that of the then Abbot Ulrich Amstein – still reminds us of this time.
1848
In 1848, the building was bought by Mr. Geiser-Ryser, a factory owner, and demolished and rebuilt as a factory building in 1860.
1942
The rear part of the building was added in 1942. Today’s atrium was built and has shaped the layout of the building ever since. Around 1970, the building was converted into a hotel.
2001
On January 1, 2001, Roman and Marie-José Steiner took over the building and developed it into one of the most modern hotels in the city with great commitment and foresight.
2005
The hotel and the building are continuously modernized and sustainably upgraded through ongoing investments.
2008
The Steiner family acquired the ‘Rössli’ as an extension and additional business to the Hotel Engel.
2011
Their son Grégory Steiner has been running the hotel since 2011 and is continuing the family tradition with passion.
2019
At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hotel Amadeo was converted into an aparthotel. The result is four modern apartments and one double room.
2024
It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Roman Steiner. With his warmth and tireless passion, he had a decisive influence on the Hotel Engel. His passion and his spirit remain unforgotten and live on in the daily work at the hotel.

We are aware that our business activities also leave their mark. We want to keep it as small as possible by using our resources carefully. To this end, we are guided by best practice examples and consciously look at where we can take meaningful and effective action:
We are constantly increasing the energy efficiency of our operations and thus making a contribution to the 2050 climate target, paying increasing attention to the environmental impact, origin and seasonality of food, and – wherever possible – focusing on repairs, reuse and long-lasting solutions instead of new purchases.
These measures may be small – but they are chosen with conviction. For us, sustainability is not a finished state, but a path that we follow carefully and with common sense.
